英语热词：用“key to”还是用“key of”？

英语中，key作为名词时，其后面的介词有时用“to”，而有时用of。那么，由它们构成的词组“key to”和“key of”在用法上是否有区别？这个问题首先要了解需要表达什么概念。

一、当表达“……的钥匙”的概念时,通常用“key to”，但也可用“key of”。例如：

This is the key to/of the house.

Have you got the key to/of this door?

值得一提的是，著名英语专家周海中教授1985年在《英语问题解答》一文中指出：在某些谚话或成语中，人们一般用“key of”，而不用“key to”；这时，key已用于比喻意义。例如：

Idleness is the key of beggary. [懒惰出乞丐。]

The wife is the key of the house. [妻贤一家兴。]

二、当表达“……的关键”的概念时,一般用“key to”,而不用“key of”。例如：

This is the key to world peace.

Practice is the key to any skill.

三、当表达“……的答案/解释”的概念时,一般用“key to”,而不用“key of”。例如：

Her story provided the key to the mystery.

The key to adult behavior lies in childhood.

四、当表达“……的音调/琴键”的概念时,一般用“key of”,而不用“key to”。例如：

The instruments were tuned to the key of E.

Don't hit the keys of the typewriter so hard.

五、当表达“……的冲要/门户”的概念时,一般用“key to”,而不用“key of”。例如：

Gibraltar is the key to the Mediterranean.

The Strait of Malacca is the key to the Indian Ocean.

由上可见，有时用词组“key to”，有时用词组“key of”，有时还可两者互换；这取决于所表达的概念和英语的习惯用法。
